Change Your Status: How to Break Free from the Patterns Keeping You Stuck

Most of us don't stay stuck because we lack willpower. We stay stuck because our nervous system has learned that staying put is safer than moving forward. Here's how to change that.

There's a moment most of my clients describe the same way. They're sitting across from me — or on the other side of a screen — and they say some version of: "I know what I need to do. I just can't make myself do it."

This isn't a motivation problem. It isn't a discipline problem. It's a nervous system problem.

When we've been in a particular pattern for long enough — whether that's a relationship dynamic, a way of handling stress, or a story we tell ourselves about what we're capable of — our brain starts to treat that pattern as "safe." Not comfortable. Not good. Just familiar enough to feel survivable.

The first step to changing your status isn't motivation. It's awareness. You have to be able to see the pattern before you can interrupt it. That means getting curious about the moments right before you default to the old behavior. What are you feeling? What are you telling yourself? What does your body do?

The second step is tolerating discomfort. Real change feels wrong at first — not because it is wrong, but because it's unfamiliar. Your nervous system will send alarm signals. That's normal. The goal isn't to eliminate the discomfort; it's to learn to move through it anyway.

The third step is building evidence. Every time you choose differently — even in a small way — you're creating new data for your brain. You're proving to yourself that the new behavior is survivable. Over time, that new pattern becomes the familiar one.

Change isn't a single decision. It's a thousand small ones. But it starts with seeing clearly where you are right now — and deciding that's not where you want to stay.
